Poem - "Archeopteryx"

I wrote this to experiment with rhyming and a set number of syllables, and I think it came out rather well. Please comment if you have any feedback!

Archeopteryx
by [personal profile] untonuggan

Binoculars in hand, I watch
as backyard birds defend their patch:
fierce blue jays imitating hawks,
starlings fighting with warlike squawks.

Each year chickadees make their nest;
bubbling house wrens give no rest,
invade the bird box set to kill
pierce chick's eggs, their home to fill.

A red-winged hawk haunts the feeder
stalking an unwary eater;
brings the corpse home to feed its brood;
in the end, everyone is food.

Who can blame their survival war?
they're not so far from dinosaur;
change scale to feather, tooth to beak;
T. rex's bloodline isn't weak.
