untonuggan: A photo looking up at an autumn tree canopy (autumn trees)
A poem inspired by anniversaries and autumn and EMDR and, ultimately, PTSD.

What is it about autumn light?

Happystance
by [personal profile] untonuggan

Twice today
in a fragmentary way
I felt like myself again
just a glimpse of happystance
before things snapped back
into shades of gray.

untonuggan: typewriter on a table, faded (writing)
I write silly limmericks to cope when I am out of cope. Probably I should do this when I am not out of cope, too; this is something I am working on. Anywho, here's one from recent days:

There once was a boy, Harry Potter,
whose patronus was not weasel or otter;
with a brilliant stag,
dementors he did bag,
and Tom Riddle's army did totter.
untonuggan: typewriter on a table, faded (writing)
In honor of NaPoWriMo, the first poem I've written in awhile. It's about, what else, spinning. I actually wrote it earlier, but I've polished it up some.

drop spindle
by [personal profile] untonuggan

spinning
 is
  energy
   twirl-twist
  hair into yarn
 fibre into clothes
the spin leaps
 into the fibre
  jumps from my hands
   sculpting this living fibre
wool from alpaca sheep llama
 herbivores munching on plants
raised by the rays of the sun's
    ever-pulsing energy
   energy shaped the spindle
  felled from a tree
shaped by a craftsman
  spinning like a top
    releasing energy--

    in a whorl of creativity

[personal profile] jjhunter  and I had a collaborative poetry jam! We wrote seven poems in three days, and now we're posting about the process and putting up our favorite poems over on [community profile] poetree . Today is day two. You should check it out!

PS Signal-boosts appreciated, if you are up for it.
untonuggan: Lily and Chance squished in a cat pile-up on top of a cat tree (buff tabby, black cat with red collar) (Default)
I had a moment of enlightenment/nirvana that was quite nice yesterday amidst all the suffering/dukka I've been going through lately. I wrote about it in [personal profile] jjhunter 's most recent How Are You? (in haiku) post, but felt it deserved its own space as well.

The poetic version:

arose from child's pose
quest complete: a pair of bluebirds
found a home in mine
bonus prize: cedar waxwings
bathing, my eyes shedding years

The prose version:
Cut in case you just want the poetry without any spoiler explanations )

ETA: And yes, I did cheat and make it a tanka. :P

untonuggan: A British stamp of Queen Elizabeth (UK stamp)
Tanka 12/14/2012

stamps whisper stories
a journey from hand to truck
unknown messengers
the promise of a letter
unopened, with words to spill

nudged to write again by reading the works of [personal profile] jjhunter , [personal profile] ysabetwordsmith , [personal profile] alee_grrl ,[personal profile] cadenzamuse and all the folks on [community profile] poetree . Thank you!

Poem written for one of my penpals...who I don't think follows me here, so hopefully it won't spoil the snail mail surprise!

untonuggan: Two African American men gazing at a sign reading "March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom" (bayard rustin)
So this poem was totally not what I was thinking of writing, and I'm still not completely sure about it or whether it totally completes the goals of the challenge. Plus, I have generally learned to trust poems that write themselves, so. Here you go.

If you're interested in the Poetree challenge for this week, you can find it here.

never learned anything from history
by [personal profile] untonuggan

i used to be a historian
but it done make me mad done make me sad
all the cheatin' all the stealin' all the lyin'
all the killin' we done all through time

Ancient Rome threw people to the lions
was built by slaves and stealing peoples' land
people say, look at those buildings
they're a great civilization
we should try to be like Rome
it done made me made done made me sad

i thought, i'll take a fun class
sex and sexuality in the US
NSFW (language) and also cut for length )

untonuggan: A leather journal (well-used) (journal)
Remember how I wrote that sacred poem etheree for the Poetree challenge awhile back? Well, folks suggested that I make it a double etheree (or whatever one would call it) to complete the wheel, so to speak. I finally got around to doing that, so here it is. Thought I'd post it in time for the Sunday Picnic over on [community profile] poetree .

What prompted this? Super not-so-secret plans to maybe make some sort of zine...probably available electronically in pdf and/or epub via donation with some/all of proceeds going to charity. There will be writing not posted online! And doodles/drawings! And maybe some knitting patterns! Who knows! It's exciting and deserves exclamation points! I have collected 19 printed pages of writing so far, and I haven't even gotten to what's stored on my netbook.

wheel of the year
by [personal profile] untonuggan

birth
the first
ewe of spring
a fertile rite
of Brigid's warm hearth
the wheel has turned again
rejoice in Imbolc's promise
not long til the crocus bursts forth
not long til we dance round the maypole
not long til Midsummer, and nights grow long

Mayapples have faded, fruition bursts forth
now it's John Barleycorn's time again
Lammas, harvest, giving thanks
as leaves fade from trees, so light
again begins to fade
the Veil at Samhain
is thin as night
Midwinter
not-death
birth

untonuggan: Someone with an umbrella standing in a forest of fall trees (rain)
Inspired by [community profile] 3_good_things_a_day and shared with the Dreamwidth community because of the generosity of all the anonymous donors from my recent crowdfunding campaign (so that I could continue having a paid account).

Autumn Haiku

dropped yellow leaves
geese honking their way southward
afghans round my toes

untonuggan: historic-style drawing of a woman with long hair dressed in purple robes sitting in a field (pagan woman)
wolf tanka

once there were packmates
paws, familiar scents, hunters
to help bring down prey
humans came, we were hunted
faint pawprints in snow, alone

[personal profile] jjhunter  has graciously requested that I share this with everyone, so here is her poem from the recent crowdfunding. (I went slightly over on line count, because the poem needed it.)

Across the Atlantic

To form the perfect castle using memory and sand:
a brisk day by the English seaside,
too rocky and cold to swim;
yellow bucket, salty water, fickle cloud;
a just-met cousin to help build the walls,
a teasing boy cousin to knock them down;

at last, a Kodak moment when all gather proudly
before gran and mum and aunties
to show the fine moat and walls they have built:
defenses against unknown invaders,
useless against the impending tide
and ravages of memory, time;
until one day a bright picture brings back the tang
of salt tears as the sea took the castle home.

Wow, that was amazing! I got a year's worth of dreamwidth points in a matter of hours. Everyone rocks! Officially.

I got several donations from anonymous donors, and in gratitude I'm going to pay it forward by posting some poetry I've written recently and possibly also posting some icon backgrounds for anyone to snag. (Note: I may be using them as icons myself as well.) I'll start with this poem here....I hope no one is opposed to Buddhist themes. ;)

Mindful Origami

crane
folded
pause, inhale
paper symbol
origami peace
an exhale for each crease
from my lungs to trees' new leaves
with one mindful act, a sapling
inhales into a forest, exhales
into paper, a crane, rebirth, no self.

untonuggan: text: "If only yarn grew on trees" with a photo of trees that have been yarn bombed (covered with knitted yarn) (yarn trees)
note: I am using the short-long-short method rather than the 5-7-5 method of counting syllables

sticks and string
my fingers, loops of wool
suddenly, socks

[community profile] poetree  Challenge #11 was to write a sacred poem. I know I'm a bit stuck on etherees at the moment, but here's another one. (I just like the form, okay?)

wheel of the year

birth
the first
ewe of spring
a fertile rite
of Brigid's warm hearth
the wheel has turned again
rejoice in Imbolc's promise
not long til the crocus bursts forth
not long til we dance round the maypole
not long til Midsummer, and nights grow long
untonuggan: A photo looking up at an autumn tree canopy (autumn trees)
In response to [community profile] poetree  challenge #7, I give you "how I am, in etheree"...

Home Hunt

hunt
a house
find a house
better yet, home
painted by sunlight
sheltered by ten stout trees
bordered by a walking trail
with a bus that leaves for the shops
give me a fireplace where I can curl
and knit hats through each snowy winter's night

...and by the way, we got a house/home which is very nice and meets all of the above description. So assuming all goes well with the inspection and all that nonsense I will be moving into it at the end of June. (And my bedroom will have windows! Real windows! Looking out to a park with trees!).
untonuggan: an open road stretches into the distance (open road)
...and also [personal profile] jjhunter 's dare that I enter. This idea has actually been kicking around in my brain since Friday, and it turns out a poem was the perfect way to express it. The following is an etheree, which is a very fun poem to write.

"Up/Down"

up
pedal
pump up hill
keep beat with breath
don't stop, don't think just
feel body flow breathe in
still on the edge of the hill
mockingbird breathes its soulmate's song
warbling in time with legs' up down
crescendo and crest the hill, fly back down

Just had two poems published in the June, 2011 issue of LYNX: A Journal for Linking Poets (see www.ahapoetry.com for more details about the online journal.) Rights now revert back to me, and so I can share my two poems with you. (They're both tanka, btw.)

[Untitled tanka numero uno]

spring wind
black bird silhouettes
in formation
silver bicycles spin past
a breeze going downhill

[Untitled tanka numero dos]

dragonfly pair
each insect beats four wings
then eight
a child wonders why they're stuck
you and I quiver as one
