A post of cuteness because today I need cuteness. *avoids news and thinkpieces like the plague*

But in the meantime, I have been harassing photographing the cats with my new camera.

I made a Flickr set with just-new-camera photos. I am also going to play with video editing because I got video of butt-wiggles but it's interspersed with lots of time of them deciding when is a good time to pounce.

Also here's a teaser photo below the cut )

And on my tumblrs there is a Lily lolcat meme because butter box.

Also if you are looking for cute animal things, this animal shelter has some really good cat memes on their facebook page. (Including Adele-new-album mashups).

(feel free to link if people are looking for cute things for today or whatnots)

[personal profile] jadelennox is hosting a friending meme. Maybe you don't have spoons, you have no more time for reading more people, or even new internet people are scary right now. That is all cool! But if you want, you can check the meme out.

Yoinked from several people, here's a meme that is going around that includes several things you may or may not already know about me. Leaving off the obvious like "Oh I knit a LOT" and going for some more obscure things...I think. It's early, so we'll see.
  1. My favorite activity in third grade was building forts or lean-to's in my (or a friend's) backyard, and I secretly wanted to be Laura Ingalls Wilder.
  2. I skipped the 8th grade, and took a *lot* of flack for it in school. Probably a good decision academically, but social hell.
  3. I went to an "alternative school" founded by hippies.
  4. I went to prom with another girl.
  5. My mother is an immigrant to the US, but she's from the UK so for most people that "doesn't count" (and I could say a lot about this).
  6. My favorite place on this entire planet is the lane looking up the moors behind my grandmother's domicile.
  7. I burned out on academic history, but I still secretly love it.
  8. I haven't been consistently able to read a book for approximately three years due to some combination of meds and/or brain fog. The concentration issue is spreading to TV shows and movies.
  9. I have a bunch of diagnoses, so many that most doctors give me looks of skepticism and a hard time. (The good doctors just look more curious.) Key highlights include: fibromyalgia and/or late stage Lyme; POTS/dysautonomia; Bipolar Disorder; PTSD; migraines.
  10. My partner and I have been together for 9 years (yay! *cheers*), and are still not out to her entire family. It's complicated. However, just came out to one more and she didn't care. So +1.
  11. OK, I have to talk about fiber at least once. I'm part of a Spinning and Weaving Guild. A *guild*. (see #1 and #3 and #5 and #7 for why I find this extra exciting.)
  12. Spiritually I consider myself a Buddhist and a recovering Pagan, because I had some Bad Experiences with people but not the Goddess. If that makes sense to y'all.
No obligation to complete this meme just because you've read it, of course ^___^ However, feel free to play along.
untonuggan: bookshelves stuffed with books (books - lots)
Rejoice! For whatever reason, my brain has decided to be nice and allow me to read books again without the annoying stumbling over a sentence five times thing until I just give up. This is very exciting, because I haven't been able to read read for oh, three years.

Yes.

I am mostly diving into "teen" fantasy, because that is my pleasure reading and when you've been deprived of reading for quite awhile it's important to nourish that core of you.

What I read recently
I read the entire Frontier Magic  series by Patricia C. Wrede (even though I'd already read the first two, I wanted to reread them to refamiliarize myself with the characters before finishing it). Overall, I liked it, though not as much as some of her other works. I do disagree with some of how she created the frontier (i.e. leaving out Native Americans entirely), but as my partner pointed out...the Lewis and Clark expedition minus Sacagawea didn't make it back, did they? And she did a lot of reshuffling of history, and the premise of the book wouldn't have worked if there were people there. Which. Is problematic too. I did really like what she did with trauma especially in the first book, and with meditation techniques, and with women's rights and also the Underground Railroad. So. The ending was also highly satisfying.

Have also been rereading some Pratchett, notably the Tiffany Aching books, which I've already read. Tried to reread the Chronicles of the Necromancer, which is a series I love at least the beginning of, but the book is too damn heavy.

What I'm reading now
Bitterblue by Kristin Cashore, which is the third in her Graceling Realm series. I am enjoying it, though not as much as Graceling but more than Fire. It reminds me a lot of what I've read about say, the effects of opening the Stazi archive to the public, versus not doing so with other secret police files in certain other former Soviet Bloc countries. In other words, how does a country deal with a history of atrocities when the main perpetrator is gone, but others must have been complicit or at least accomplices for the power system to work? How far does "following orders" go as an excuse (in the book, there's magic involved, but still)? How does a country heal from violence? And this is how you tell that I'm a history major as well as a reader of fantasy novels...

What I'm going to read soon

Moar Pratchett! I picked up Dodger, which somehow I haven't read yet (probably as it's not Discworld, or maybe it's just never at the library, so I caved and bought a copy for the Pratchett shelf). Also his new book Raising Steam is coming out in March, but that's a long way off. I might make my way through some of the Discworld books I haven't read in awhile, or maybe I'll try something new...

[personal profile] zhelana  is hosting a Summer Fun Friending Meme. It is indeed fun and summery.
untonuggan: a drop spindle and the products of my first week of spinning (7 balls of yarn in various colors) (spinning week 1)
For those of you wondering what, exactly, one does when spinning, here is the best UpGoerFive version I could come up with (that is, using the 10,000 most commonly used words). There are many details that are lacking, obviously, but I think it gets the basic idea across...

I put a piece of animal hair on a thing that turns. I turn the thing and the turning goes up the hair. The turn makes the hair smaller and stronger. When it stops turning, I put the animal hair around a stick on the thing that turns. I do this for a long time, until I have a very long piece of small and strong animal hair. Then I can call it finished, or I can make it more strong by turning two or more animal hairs together on the thing that turns. When I decide it is finished, I have to make it wet. If I don't, the turn can come out. I put the long, strong, animal hair in hot water with a thing that cleans it and make the water move around. Then I take it out and hit the animal hair against something. After it dries, I can use the turned animal hair to make clothes or other things.

Things I am grateful for beginning with the letter "L", meme via [personal profile] oursin :
  • love <3: Nuff said?
  • letters: I am quite enjoying my month of letters, especially as I have discovered some fun stationary for bargain price$ and have made some of my own, too.
  • Lavar Burton/LaForge, Geordi: Pioneer of disability in!space! plus engineering wiz. There is a great Jess Fink comic that I believe sums it up best. (Plus, don't forget READING RAINBOW zomg.) (And yes I love Picard too, but this is the letter L we are talking about.)
  • Licorice/Liquorice however the heck you spell it. Do Brits and USers even agree? I dunno, that stuff is addictive. Especially Pontefract cakes. Om nom nom. (Did I mention my grandmother is visiting and may be bringing said addictive substance? I am craving it especially now.)
  • Library of Congress: Even though they are suuuuuuuper slow bringing things from the stacks, and sometimes they have mysteriously lost items...it's still really awesome to do research there. I miss it. *sigh* Not enough to get a PhD though.
  • Liz! because self-love is a good thing. ^_____^
  • Lace charts. Apparently now in addition to spinning I am on a lace knitting kick? And suddenly, after over a year of hating the darn things, they suddenly make sense and I love them. So yes, lace charts, we like them yes.
  • Longbottom, Neville. In my brainworld, Neville would have done it in four books. Just sayin'. <3 And with less angst. (Not to start a fan war, I am just stating personal preference. OK? OK. Good? Good.)
I could go into things like Leicester, Blue-Faced Wool, which is delightful to work with -  it really, really is and I am looking forward to spinning some fancy stuff - but I think I will save that for not my circle, because a long list can be boring.

If you're interested in doing this meme too, comment and I'll give you a letter of your own!
untonuggan: a line of ducklings walking towards the viewer (duckling line)
This may be old news to some of you, but [personal profile] dingsi  has a love meme up until February 5th.

I may have a thread...and could always use love. As could many other people. Go! Play! Have fun! If that is your kind of thing...
untonuggan: Image of a woman in bed with a laptop, text reads "Today I just want to stay in bed, drink tea and browse the internet" (tea browse internet in bed)
Doing: sitting by the fire in the fireplace and trying to warm my aching joints, wrapped in knitwear. This is a fairly common position for me in winter even when it's not cold (because I looooove fire), except for when I'm ousted by other people who want the television in the same room.

Thinking: how much I am missing my morning routine, and how much routines can affect one. Not only am I turfed out of the bathroom and all that entails (usual place to shower gone, cleaning up plaster, etc.), but due to pain today there is no exercise and therefore less endorphins. Am hoping to counteract the typical grumpiness that goes along with this by showering myself with yarn and other comfort things.

Wondering about: water in the birdbath is frozen, mother hoping to get a birdbath defroster thingy...but what did birds do before birdbath defrosters?

Reading: a book on free machine sewing. Forget what it is called, but it is quite good. (It helps my brain that there are lots of photos.) Also, I got a couple books on organization but decided they were rubbish/I knew the non-rubbish bits.

Watching: 30 Rock on Netflix. I'm partway through season 1. Honestly, I started watching for Tina Fey, and now I am watching for the tension between her character and Alec Baldwin's. ETA: And Kenneth.

Bonus: If you like folk music, I highly recommend Lucy Kaplansky, who is a singer-songwriter-turned-psychologist-turned-singer-songwriter-again. Not because her songs are all psychoanalytical or anything, but because they are really beautiful.

So, what are you doing, thinking, wondering about, reading, watching, making, or writing, that you don't usually post about?

untonuggan: Pile of books (book)
stolen from [personal profile] brigid . It's international book week. The rules: Grab the closest book to you, turn to page 52, post the 5th sentence. Don't mention the title. Copy the rules as part of your post.

"Take anything you find in any instruction book, including this one, with a large grain of salt."

[personal profile] jjhunter (who is awesome) is running a love meme over at her journal, feel free to check it out! I may or may not have, erm, nominated a bunch of people and then my hands may or may not have gotten tired partway down my list...so yeah. Feel free to comment, nominate others, nominate yourselves, you know the drill!

Comments are being actively unscreened through Sunday September 23rd.

topic swiped from [personal profile] finch , not sure of its exact origin

Why did you choose your journal name?

I was sitting in front of the computer in Starbucks wondering what to type. It wasn't anything in particular that spurred it (except perhaps the coffee). My first name is Liz, so that part is obvious. I thought about my writing creating commotion. I also thought about co-motion, which I figured was in the spirit of dreamwidth. Of course, it was hard to fit both meanings into one spelling.

Just thought I'd let you know that there's an awesome 3w4dw writer's friending meme over on [personal profile] yifu 's journal. I have a thread started as well.
