A Fic That I Need

untonugganDespite the fact that MCU is pissing me off with various decisions and I kind of don't want to support them by writing tons more fic in their universe, and I am also focusing on writing more femslash...
I do NEED this fic. Like, need it.
The idea:Tony Stark does not make bad life choices Tony Stark uses his inventive powers to make lots of accessibility devices for Bucky and his PTSD/arm and also for any residual Steve/Falcon/Bucky I-have-been-in-war pains. And lbr, also probably PTSD. Like not "let me put a power supply in your body" but like actual accessibility devices.
I leave the bulk of What Accessible Devices Would Tony Stark Make up to the creator of the fic, but I can think of some. (Like for PTSD, noise cancelling devices, but also store walls that are designed to absorb noise rather than reflect it. Maybe some sort of sonar device that clicks to let you know someone is coming up behind you, to help with startle reflex. But then Bucky is like, no Tony, that is actually just making me twitchier, sorry.) For pain? Maybe a glove so that when people rush up to shake Falcons' hand with crushing excitement, it doesn't set off pain because the glove absorbs the force.
Also, perhaps Falcon is like, "Hey, I have some friends from the VA, maybe you can help them out, too." And Natasha is like, "So, it's not just war heroes who have PTSD you know." And maybe Pepper and Natasha and Maria Hill all share a moment of, "Ha, even the Shield doctors don't take women seriously. *shared eyeroll*"
AND THEN Tony Stark gets all mad because WHY IS THE ADA SO POORLY ENFORCED and and UNIVERSAL DESIGN IS BETTER ANYWAY and WHY IS THERE NOT MORE FUNDING and he uses all his moniez to go on a media/lobbying blitz about it. And eventually he gets super angry about it and Pepper's like "Tony, Tony. You do not need to destroy a building with your metal suit to make a point." And Tony Stark is like, "WHY NOT. Why is the system so fucked up! It is infuriating! Also they keep putting displays in front of the automatic door and will not listen to reason!" And then Pepper goes in and uses the art of Diplomacy, and there is also maybe a deployment of Maria Hill or perhaps even Natasha Romanov to certain lawmakers to pressure them into better legislation.
OK yes I need this now. To wash the bitter bitter taste of CA: CW out of my mouth (which I have not even seen).

"Yeah. It's a live glove." Tony waggled his eyebrows, and made an impatient gesture with both hands. "Put it on. It'll hook up just like your existing ones."
"So what makes it better?" Sam pulled the strip holding the wrist closed and wriggled his fingers in. "Ooh. Cushy. I like the padded palm."
"It's got a force sensor in it. A little bird told me your hands get sore and all the glad-handing makes it worse. When this material feels a lot of external pressure, it gets stiffer. No more crushed hands."
To demonstrate, he put on his "business" face and stuck out a hand. Sam gave Tony a dubious look and shook it.
The glove didn't move, exactly, so much as it gently refused to move. Tony squeezed down hard, all his ironsmith's strength in play, and made a grotesque grimace to demonstrate just how hard he was working for it.
Sam grinned, not feeling a thing beyond a gentle pressure.
"How do I get a case of these?"
Tony pointed at the ceiling - or rather, at the bulk of Avengers tower. "I was hoping you'd ask."

Might have fic that goes into it in more details? But might not. I poke everything with that kind of summary but Sturgeon's Law, etc. etc.

Brothers In Arms, by copperbadge, who you may know from previous fandom stuff? He's on the BNF end of fannish people I know about.
It is 11K of Bucky bonding with robots and coming back to himself and it is DELIGHTFUL. Also Tony being pretty great about things:
"Spit it out, Rogers, we're all damaged and crazy, there is no judgment in the workshop," Tony said tiredly.

Not 100% sure if you'll like this one; the universe is a LOT more comics-based (particularly the other bits in the series, which unfortunately do not involve much in the way of robots :/), but it's entirely focused on Bucky, an adorable robot (mk. VII in Tony's line of prototypes for use as medical aides, as well as being adorable it does things like annoys you until you take your meds/eat/go to bed/etc.), and Pepper Pots. The robot is definitely my favourite part, but Pepper is also extremely badass. :3

Bucky recovery fic!! :D
Seriously seriously great, though, and is the most - I don't like to use 'realistic' in fiction, because that reminds me of terrible Literature things where everything is grey and terrible forever because ~realism~ but it definitely has a great sense of real-world space. It's not just a tiny bubble of characters, there're incidental people they run into, who clearly have their own entire lives, and it just kind of expands, into this whole feeling of community and connectedness. Even when, you know, Bucky is super super Not Okay and can't even really bear to be around people.
Also IIRC there's like, two male OCs and the rest are ladies, all of whom are AMAZING in different ways, and you get to read a lot more about them in the side-story series, it's so great. :x (Also there's a fic from Jarvis' POV that got posted last week, and ahhhhhhhhh) (But you know me and robots, so... yes.) Also speaking of ladies: Betty Ross! She not only exists but is around, it's so great, she's so awesome. <3

to win back what you've lost is also a good one! Much shorter than M's fic, and - IDK, there's a definite difference in tone between them, but I'm not sure how to define it. Part of it's definitely that it's shorter, so you don't get all of the details, but it's also just... IDK, a little easier, I guess.
I'm generally sad-happy in that heartaching oh babycat no, somebody please give you a hug you sweet broken thing sort of way by halfway through the first chapter (of nine), and it doesn't really stop, though things do get much better. This Bucky is just so kind, even when he has barely any idea of what being a person is.
Also features: Tony Stark the prosthetic designer whose closest thing to a medical lab involves a pink couch, and awesome OC lady with prosthetic legs, and is also a doctor, both of which I think are getting close to what you're actually looking for in this post.

The Infinite Coffee And Protection Detail is my actualfacts favourite. Perhaps not surprisingly, it's also the most comic universe of them. Not that it doesn't deal with rough shit - it's one of those fics where you can be laughing hysterically one minute and then BAM! feelings ripping through your guts and honestly if I was a frequent crier there would be tears quite a lot. But it's generally way more upbeat than you'd think a story about a guy relearning how to human should be.
This is mainly because Barnes views everything with a large layer of sarcasm between him and it. Even before he's anything like a person again. I mean. Look, this is the very first paragraph:
The mission has been complicated. It should have been a standard kill job, but the target had been slippery and surprisingly well trained, with obnoxious backup. Really obnoxious, flying backup. Who has that?
I love this fic-series SO MUCH. Barnes' recovery is full of grump and exasperation and accidentally making friends with old people (who are so fantastic, I swear, they are super fun). Becoming increasingly self-aware not just of his, you know, self, but also his emotional responses and how to manage them and what kindness looks like and wanting to emulate it, and an innate protective streak about five miles wide.
It's definitely more on the wish-fulfilement side of things, rather than particularly realistic (and it knows it and it's lampshaded via Sam), so if that kind of thing annoys you it might not be for you. But it also deals with the bad shit, so, yeah. *hand gestures* I really like it, and when I finally convinced Azy to read it she also went head over heels, and her taste in fic is a lot more discerning than mine. (A LOT. Not that that's. Particularly difficult. Um. >>;;;)

Date: 2016-05-17 06:04 pm (UTC)(Me and Lisa actually have done at least a half-dozen roleplay AUs with Steve in a wheelchair in various different permutations, including one totally indulgent AU where he was at Bletchley Park, because Steve Rogers is smart, and stubborn as hell. The survival of Steve to this decade is a little awkward for most of these scenarios, but we basically handwave it with 'well he snuck onto the Red Skull's plane somehow and had a botched version of the serum which helped him survive'.)
(Also thing I notice that never stops hurting my heart: when Steve is beating up the bag in the first Avengers movie, he flashes back to the plane going down... and being in the ice. He's aware in that moment as they're getting him out and realise he's still alive. How much of the time in the ice does Steve remember?)
