Thanks to
alee_grrl for bringing this problematic show (and petition) to my attention.
The premise of National Geographic's new show "Diggers" is that treasure hunters go around digging up archaeological sites looking for "treasure." The whole concept ignores the real value of archaeology, which is putting these treasures in context and telling us more about our history while doing what they can to preserve the site. Additionally encouraging this sort of treasure hunting could well lead to the destruction of indigenous holy sites as well as historical sites. It is distasteful and shameful.
Please sign this petition asking National Geographic to remove this show from their line-up.
